The Mental Health Benefits of Belonging

LGBTQIA+ care

Humans instinctively seek connection. We all want to feel accepted, understood, and valued by the people around us. Feeling that you belong somewhere can improve your outlook on life and help you cope with stress during challenging times.

Unfortunately, many people who struggle with their mental health or addiction experience the opposite, often becoming isolated, disaffected, and misunderstood. These feelings can be even more common for members of the LGBTQIA+ community due to experiences with discrimination, rejection, or pressure to hide their identity.

Addiction and Isolation Often Go Hand in Hand

People with healthy social lives experience higher self-esteem, better emotional resilience, and improved well-being. Whether you’re celebrating your successes or confronting obstacles, having supportive people around you can make a significant difference.

Unfortunately, addiction frequently leads to loneliness. As substance use takes over your life, your relationships may begin to suffer as you withdraw from friends and family in favor of spending time alone. Mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, and trauma can have a similar effect. The more isolated you become, the harder it will feel to reach out for help, creating a vicious cycle.

The Importance of Safe Spaces

For members of traditionally marginalized communities, feeling connected also means being able to show up as your authentic self without fear of judgment.

For many LGBTQIA+ people, this is easier said than done. Perhaps you have experienced rejection from family members, discrimination at work or school, bullying, or social stigma. You may feel forced to mask your true self to avoid conflict or criticism. Living with that level of stress can chip away at your self-confidence and well-being.

Safe and affirming spaces give you a place to let your guard down, build trust, and form meaningful relationships with others who understand your experiences.

Why Community Supports Recovery

The goal of seeking professional treatment is to create a healthier, more fulfilling life for yourself. A supportive community can help by:

  • Providing encouragement during difficult times
  • Offering accountability and motivation
  • Reducing feelings of loneliness, which can have long-term health consequences
  • Teaching you healthy coping skills
  • Creating opportunities for friendship and personal growth

Everyone Is Welcome at Maryville Integrated Care

Maryville Integrated Care believes connections are crucial in recovery. Queer and trans providers have designed our LGBTQIA+ outpatient programming to provide a welcoming, inclusive environment where people from all walks of life can feel safe, supported, and understood.

Our Turnersville Outpatient site, offered in person and via telehealth, is an affirming space for our LGBTQIA+ clients. You’ll have access to peer support services, introducing you to people who have had similar experiences and been through your unique challenges. These relationships can provide vital guidance and hope.

We also encourage people who complete our programs to remain involved through our alumni services and recovery community. Alumni events offer opportunities to build supportive friendships, socialize in a substance-free environment, learn new skills, stay engaged, and give back to others who are earlier in their recovery.

We All Need a Place to Belong

Recovery can feel overwhelming when you try to do it alone. Healing becomes easier when you surround yourself with people who uplift you and want to see you succeed.

Maryville Integrated Care believes everyone deserves a place where they can be themselves and build meaningful connections as they work on creating a more fulfilling future.
