Stimulants are powerful drugs that speed up the body and brain. Though they can make people feel more alert, excited, or energetic, they can also be dangerous.

At Maryville Integrated Care, we are always looking for better ways to help people who struggle with stimulant addiction. That’s why we stay up to date on new treatments that can improve recovery and save lives.

Why Are Stimulants So Addictive?

Stimulants are drugs that increase brain activity. Examples include methamphetamine, cocaine, and prescription drugs like Adderall or Ritalin. People might take these drugs to stay awake, focus better, or feel a rush of energy. But these effects wear off quickly, which may cause users to increase their dosage beyond a safe amount. The more you use stimulants, the more harm they can cause.

Stimulants cause a rapid rush of a feel-good chemical called dopamine. Over time, your brain will adjust to that feeling and want more, leading to cravings and dependency. Once an addiction develops, you will experience uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms when trying to quit using stimulants. Withdrawal is a sign that you would benefit from medically supervised detoxification.

The Challenges of Treating Stimulant Addiction

Unlike other substances, there are currently no FDA-approved medications to treat stimulant addiction and its consequences:

  • Mental health issues like anxiety or depression
  • Trouble sleeping or eating
  • Powerful cravings and mood swings
  • Risk of overdose

Because these symptoms can be intense, successful recovery requires an integrated approach within a safe, structured place to heal.

Maryville’s Contingency Management Approach

Maryville Integrated Care treats stimulant use disorder through our expert-led, compassionately designed programs. Contingency management is one of the tools we use to reduce harm.

This reward-based treatment gives positive reinforcement for people who make healthy choices. Those who attend scheduled therapy appointments, stay sober, or join group activities could receive small prizes that motivate them to stay on track.

This method is especially beneficial for people who are addicted to stimulants. It helps them stay focused on their goals and feel proud of their progress.

A New Path to Healing

Because stimulant abuse and overdoses are a nationwide crisis, treatment centers, doctors, and health leaders must come together and find workable solutions.

We believe everyone deserves a chance to heal. Whether you struggle with meth, cocaine, or prescription stimulants, we offer empathetic, science-backed care. Contact us today to start your recovery.

Relapse is one of the most difficult and misunderstood facets of addiction recovery. Many people assume a return to substance abuse happens suddenly, like flipping a switch. Instead, relapses typically unfold in stages, often starting with subtle emotional struggles or stress long before any drug or alcohol use returns.

At Maryville Integrated Care, we believe in treating the whole person without judgment or criticism. One powerful relapse prevention tool is gratitude – the simple act of focusing on what’s going well in your life.

The Link Between Gratitude and Mental Health

Gratitude can be as simple as feeling thankful for a sunny day, a supportive friend, or a moment of peace. When you intentionally count your blessings, it can shift your mindset and improve your outlook, especially during hard times.

Studies show that gratitude can lead to:

  • Better mood and less anxiety
  • Improved sleep and physical health
  • Greater sense of purpose and self-worth
  • Stronger relationships and social support

In recovery, gratitude helps train your brain to focus on progress instead of problems. Optimistic thinking can reduce stress, calm your emotions, and make it easier to stay sober.

How Gratitude Helps Prevent Relapse

Relapse often begins with negative thoughts or emotions. For example, you might feel angry, hopeless, or isolated. These feelings can build over time and wear down your motivation to stay sober.

Practicing gratitude can interrupt the loop of negativity, remind you why you chose recovery, and give you something positive to hold on to when you feel triggered.

Some people find it helpful to:

  • Keep a journal where they write down three things they’re thankful for each day
  • Share what they’re grateful for in group therapy or support meetings
  • Use gratitude to refocus when they feel cravings or doubts

Think of these simple habits as small steps toward big change.

Relapse Is Not a Failure

If you’ve experienced a relapse, you might feel like you’ve failed – but relapse is not the end of your recovery. Instead, it is often a signal that you should revisit some part of your treatment plan. You may need additional support, a different therapeutic approach, or help managing co-occurring mental health symptoms. At Maryville, we see relapse as a reason to recommit to yourself – not to give up.

We use evidence-based approaches to help our clients stay on track, including counseling, group support, and whole-person care. We’ll work with you to create a plan that includes tools like gratitude practice, emotional regulation, and relapse prevention strategies.

Do you need help after a relapse or want to strengthen your recovery plan? Contact Maryville Integrated Care today. Healing starts with hope – and gratitude can guide your way.

Maryville Integrated Care wants your feedback! As part of our Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic (CCBHC), we’re reaching out to clients, families, and community members to learn more about what people in our area need when it comes to mental health and substance use services.

This short survey will help us understand:

  • What services are needed in your community
  • How easy it is to get help when you need it
  • Whether services feel welcoming and meet your cultural or language needs

Your answers will help us improve the programs and supports we offer in Atlantic, Burlington, Camden, Cumberland, Gloucester, and Salem counties. The survey takes about 10 minutes and is completely anonymous.

Thank you for helping us make our services even better for you and our community!

This community needs assessment aims to:

  • Identify current treatment and service needs;
  • Evaluate the accessibility of culturally and linguistically appropriate services; and
  • Highlight health disparities that may contribute to poorer outcomes for consumers.

Your insights are critical to guiding the design and improvement of our programs, ensuring they are responsive to the communities we serve. The survey takes approximately 10 minutes to complete, and all responses are anonymous.

Thank you for your time and partnership in strengthening behavioral health care in our region.
