Supporting Minority Mental Health

minority mental health

July is National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month – a time to shed light on the mental health challenges faced by Black, Hispanic/Latino, Asian American, Indigenous, and other communities of color.

At Maryville Integrated Care, we believe everyone deserves access to high-quality, respectful mental health and substance use treatment, no matter their race, culture, or language.

The Impact of Inequality on Mental Health

Mental health affects everyone, but people in marginalized communities often face extra challenges. They may deal with racism, poverty, language barriers, or unfair treatment in the health care system. These struggles can make them more vulnerable to stress, anxiety, depression, or substance use.

Sadly, many people in minority groups don’t get the mental health care they need. Some worry about facing judgment or misunderstandings. Others may not trust health care providers due to medical trauma, a lack of cultural competency, and related issues. Our CARF-accredited nonprofit organization works daily to change that.

According to statistics from the National Alliance on Mental Illness:

  • Only one in three Black adults who needs mental health care receives it.
  • Hispanic/Latino people are 50% less likely to access mental health services compared to white adults.
  • Asian Americans are three times less likely to seek mental health care than their white counterparts.
  • Indigenous communities experience PTSD at a rate 2.5 times higher than the general population.
