How Does Suboxone Work in MAT?

Suboxone treatment

Opioid addiction is a powerful disease that affects the brain and body. For many people, quitting opioids like heroin, morphine, or oxycodone without medical supervision leads to intense cravings and painful withdrawal symptoms. That’s why medication-assisted treatment has become one of the most effective tools in recovery.

At Maryville Integrated Care, we use MAT as part of a whole-person approach. Suboxone is one of the most effective FDA-approved medications used in MAT.

What Is Suboxone?

Suboxone is a prescription medication made of two ingredients – buprenorphine and naloxone.

  • Buprenorphine attaches to the same receptors in the brain that other opioids do – but it doesn’t produce the characteristic euphoria. Instead, it reduces cravings and prevents withdrawal symptoms.
  • Naloxone discourages further drug misuse. If someone tries to inject or abuse Suboxone, the naloxone will block the effects and may trigger withdrawal symptoms instead.

Together, these ingredients stabilize people who are struggling with opioid addiction, giving them a safe and structured path toward recovery.

How Suboxone Supports Recovery

When taken as prescribed and under medical supervision, Suboxone reduces cravings, eases withdrawal symptoms, and blocks the effects of other opioids. When you feel well enough to function in your daily life, it will become easier to focus on things like therapy, work, and being present for your family.

A common misconception about MAT is that it swaps one addiction for another. But that’s not true. You can think of taking Suboxone like taking insulin for diabetes – it safely and effectively treats a chronic illness as part of a medical treatment plan.

Suboxone is not addictive when prescribed and managed by trained specialists. Instead, it regulates your brain chemistry and provides the stability you need to heal.

A Customized Approach

At Maryville, MAT is available in combination with behavioral counseling in our residential and outpatient programs. Addressing the biological and behavioral sides of addiction gives our clients the best chance at long-term success.

There’s no one-size-fits-all solution to opioid addiction. That’s why we tailor a recovery plan to fit your needs, goals, and medical history. Suboxone can be a bridge to long-term wellness, offering a safer, more stable way to move forward.
