The end of summer brings a lot of change for families—earlier mornings, new teachers, new routines and new expectations.
For some youth, though, going back to school brings more than the usual nerves. Anxiety, academic pressure, social stress and other challenges can become harder to manage once the school year begins.
For parents, the first sign is often simply a feeling:
Something seems different.
Is It More Than Back-to-School Stress?
Some anxiety about returning to school is normal. But parents should pay attention when changes persist or begin affecting everyday life.
Signs that a young person may need additional support can include:
- Increased anxiety or irritability
- Avoiding school or frequently asking to stay home
- Withdrawing from family or friends
- Changes in sleep, mood or behavior
- Falling grades or missing assignments
- Loss of interest in activities
- Alcohol or drug use
One sign alone doesn’t necessarily mean there’s a serious problem. But when several changes begin adding up, it’s worth starting a conversation.
Support Designed for Youth Ages 11–17
Maryville Integrated Care provides outpatient services specifically for youth ages 11–17.
Our team understands that adolescent mental health and substance use concerns can be connected to what’s happening at school, at home, with friends and in a young person’s emotional development.
Rather than focusing only on the behavior parents can see, Maryville’s integrated approach helps address the needs behind it.
Depending on the young person’s needs, support may include mental health treatment, substance use treatment, coping and emotional regulation skills, and family involvement.
Care That Fits Around School and Family Life
Getting help shouldn’t mean putting a young person’s education on hold.
Maryville offers youth outpatient services in Turnersville and Vineland, as well as telehealth options, allowing young people to receive support while continuing to live at home and attend school. Adolescent outpatient and intensive outpatient services are also available through Maryville’s Voorhees location.
Parents Don’t Have to Wait for a Crisis
You don’t need to have everything figured out before asking for help.
If your child seems different as the school year begins, starting a conversation now may help prevent problems from becoming more serious later.
Sometimes it begins with something as simple as:
“I’ve noticed you’ve been having a hard time lately. What’s going on?”
And if you’re not sure what to do next, Maryville Integrated Care is here to help.
